Our Team

Sarah Jacques

CEO & Founder

I am someone who cares deeply about people, community, and fairness. I’ve spent most of my life working in the NHS, and when I stepped back, I realised just how many people feel unheard, unsupported, and unsure where to turn. That’s what drives me today: helping people find their voice and access the support they need – especially in places where it can feel out of reach.

I believe in strong communities, practical compassion, and listening without judgement. My journey has taken me from frontline medicine to grassroots activism, from busy GP surgeries to quiet village halls. I now work with local charities and rural support networks, building bridges between people and the services that can make a real difference to their lives.

In 2022, after nearly two decades in General Practice, I experienced significant burnout. It was one of the most difficult decisions I’ve ever made, but I knew I had to step away from medicine to recover. That time gave me a new perspective on the system and where change is needed. I realised my voice could still make an impact—perhaps even more so from outside traditional roles. I became actively involved with Doctors’ Association UK, where I now serve as GP Co-Lead, and I also campaign with the Medical Women’s Federation. In 2024, I returned to General Practice in a part-time salaried role.

When the Ukraine war broke out in February 2022, my family and I opened our home to two Ukrainian families. This experience led to us co-founding UK Welcomes Ukraine, a service that safely matched Ukrainian families with UK hosts and supported them through the visa process. It was a deeply personal and eye-opening experience. Many of the families placed in East Sussex were living in rural areas, which highlighted just how difficult it can be to access support and services. It also made me realise how many services exist locally that even I, as a GP, had not been aware of.

In response, I founded Sussex Outreach Support CIC, which works to improve access to services and activities across rural Rother, helping to reduce poverty, ill health, and isolation. Professionally, I have 19 years’ experience as a GP in East Sussex, primarily as a full-time GP partner, alongside salaried, locum, and private roles. I was an active member of the Surrey and Sussex Local Medical Committee from 2020 to 2022. I am now CEO of Sussex Outreach Support CIC, a parish councillor, and have also worked with the employability charity People Matter in Eastbourne.

Outside of work, I’m a wife, mum of two, and owner of two lively spaniels. I enjoy baking, gardening, and, when time allows, crafting, cycling, and playing the piano and guitar. Life isn’t always simple, but I’ve learned that meaningful change starts close to home—with people, conversations, and care.

All of my adult life has been set around working, volunteering or entertaining people, much in the public sector in education both teaching & lecturing in many different settings. I am a specialist in performing arts teaching in schools, university and in the wider community.

As an education consultant and local authority advisor I focused on continuing professional development and on school reorganisation to enable schools to work more effectively together for better outcomes for children. In contrast and intertwined, I worked in the entertainments industry, as both a performer and director/producer of commercial and community events.

I have a lifetime commitment to being an active member of my community, volunteering, often in parallel with a day job. A focus on health-related activities is predominant: leading GP surgeries Patient Participation Groups across Sussex, working with Healthwatch and recently as a Strategic Community Ambassador for NHS Sussex.

I have a particular interest in people getting involved in creative activities, (in the widest sense), to promote good health and wellbeing. Throughout, my MA in Social Policy leading change has informed my thinking, planning, networking and strategic work.

Listening, involving, engaging, and co-producing with the public, patients and health and care professionals is my core approach. Projects include social prescribing, healthy ageing, designing &commissioning the 111 services and reviewing complaints policies for example. Recently, focusing on the development of new ways of better delivering health and care services through Neighbourhoods and Integrated Community Teams making sure the voices of our communities are heard by the NHS Adult Social Care , Public Health and Voluntary agency colleagues especially in East Sussex.
